Teen Tutors!

Are you a high school student looking to give back to your community? Do you enjoy working with kids and want to grow as a mentor? Would you like to make or learn leadership skills?

Volunteering for Healthy Cities Tutoring accomplishes all that and more! When you volunteer, you can:

  • Get valuable service hours
  • Enter into our high school student College Scholarship lottery when you tutor for two years.
  • Ask us for letters of reference for jobs or other opportunities, we love telling other people how much we appreciate you and the good you’re doing to support your community!
  • Volunteering with HCT shows a sustained level of commitment that is highly valued by colleges and employers!

When you volunteer to be a tutor, let us know what days and times work best for you, and we’ll try to match your schedule. We’re in touch with you every step of the way!

  • Tutoring is 1 hour per week, during the school year — no tutoring during school breaks.
  • Most tutoring takes place at the school library especially if it’s during school or right after school. Tutoring can also happen at a local public library if the school library is closed for the day.
  • Tell us which schools or sites work best for you — we’re at all San Carlos public schools including San Carlos Charter and many Redwood City public schools (Clifford Elementary School, Henry Ford Elementary School, McKinley Middle School (MIT), Taft Elementary School, and Siena Youth Center serving students from multiple students at this site)
  • Tutoring usually happens on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
  • We provide guidance, support, and feedback. The student’s teacher provides work for you to do together and often students themselves (especially middle school students!) take ownership of tutoring success and will come to each session with school work you can help them with.
